In this description, we'll show you how to use the site and help you navigate among numerous additional features!

How does the DictZone French-English dictionary work?

You need to enter the word you're interested in into the search field at the top of the page, where you can already see the expressions offered by the dictionary as you type. Next to them, the FR or EN icon indicates in which language the result is available.

Clicking on the item you like takes you to the word's data page, where you can see its translations. The results are grouped by parts of speech, and at the end of the line, if we have data, we also indicate the translation frequency of the given meaning pair.

You can switch the search direction by pressing the button in front of the search field. Although the dictionary tries to provide results in the opposite French/English direction, for more accurate results, we recommend selecting the appropriate direction when searching.

By clicking on the sound icons in front of the words, you can listen to the pronunciation of the respective item in French and English. This feature comes in handy if you're just getting acquainted with the English or French language.

Below the exact translation, you'll find related expressions; here, we've selected phrases or word combinations related to your search.

Additional Features of the French-English Translator

The French-English translator also has many additional features. At the bottom of each word's data page, we link to Google Search, Wikipedia, or Wiktionary, where the expression you're looking for automatically appears as a result.

This can be useful when you want to look up occurrences of a word or its Wikipedia article.

On the right side of the page, you'll find a sidebar with your search history at the top. Especially when searching for longer texts, you may forget the meaning you looked up earlier. In such cases, you can simply click on the French-English dictionary's history, and the translation will appear again.

French It Up!

French is a popular language, and many people learn this not-so-easy-to-pronounce language. Some of its words have even found their way into English (affair, allure, croissant, déjà vu, rendezvous). French is spoken in many parts of the world, and it can help you communicate.

The French language has many interesting aspects. Did you know, for example, that the synonym for a bicycle in French is "la petite reine" or "the little queen"? The term originates from Orange-Nassau princesses, who, as young Dutch girls, were avid cyclists. They later became queens. The nickname for the bicycle came from an 1898 article in La France when the queen-to-be visited Paris.

Try your hand at pronouncing them correctly!
